Natively found in woods and open woods. Hay scented when bruised which gives it the common name. This is the only fern of its genus in midwestern and northeastern United States.  It is deer resistant.  The root system is rhizomatous and fibrous. This fern often forms vegetative colonies. lacy, papery, yellow-green, silver-gray, jointed hairs on both surfaces, tipped with white glands. finely downy; groove very shallow or none
