This is an erect, clump-forming variety.   The 2” flowers resemble a daisy with yellow and red bi-colored petals surrounding a deep brown domed center.  Yellow rays are irregularly splashed with various shades of red.  Starting in August, the flowers bloom for about 2 months and stay attractive until seed.

This collection is best expressed in the landscape en masse.  The ‘Rotogold Hybrids’ lets you avail a gamut of colors ranging from sunny yellow, gold, orange, bright red to brownish red.  These blooms come in several dozen or more at a time.  It makes an exquisite display of long blooming flowers in really hot garden colors.

Helianthus angustifolius 
Swamp Sunflower

This is a narrow leaf sunflower that is naturally found along bogs and ponds in more than 20 states in the Union.  Here in the Mid Atlantic its significant blooms appear in October in a golden mass along our rivers and inlets surrounding the Chesapeake Bay.  It thrives in sandy banks and mesic areas in full to part shade.  It has thin dark leaves which are attractive but it is the fall blooming 2” golden flower that makes this an attractive native.  In the optimum environment, it is quite prolific.  In a typical perennial bed without the excessive moisture it is less aggressive but will adapt nicely.

Swamp Sunflower

This is a selection from the native narrowleaf sunflower.  The deep dark leathery foliage of ‘Gold Lace’ is a magnificent back drop to show off the wildly gold flowers that bloom in absolute profusion in October.  Drought tolerant once established but tolerant of a wide variety of conditions.  Swamp Sunflower prefer consistent moisture while establishing.  In the optimum environment, it is quite prolific.  In a typical perennial bed without the excessive moisture it is less aggressive but will adapt nicely.

This native looks most like the annual sunflower.  It’s sunny lemon-yellow flowers appear neatly with gold/green wide centers.  Prefers moist soils in full sun, but is tolerant of drought and light shade. It responds nicely to a light fertilizer before blooming.  After blooming, cut foliage back to keep your garden tidy.  Helianthus can naturalize an area quickly so keep an eye on its development over the season.  It is best utilized in the back of a border garden.

This perennial sunflower bears bright yellow blooms during late summer to early autumn. The foliage is deep green in color.  This specimen Helianthus decapetalus 'Plenus' can help to create a focal point in your garden design for a dramatic end-of-summer blooming event.  The difference from this bloom as compared to other H. decapetalus is that multiple overlapping petals that are as full as a mum-flower.  Not the typical single, obident petal form of other sunflowers.

In true H. decapetalus form it has an attractive upright flower head.  ‘Lemon Queen’ has a distinctive softer color than the others.  Its single row of petals glows in a soft, sunny yellow rather than the deeper gold.  This tall perennial can reach 6-8 feet tall in clumps of dark green foliage.  The flowers are a branching spray of lemony flowers in the late summer.  It prefers full sun and moist soil.  Attracts butterflies and birds. Makes an excellent cut flower

Helleborus foetidus ‘Gold Bullion’             

Clear yellow bell-shaped flowers February - April with graceful chartreuse foliage lasts through the winter months. New growth appears with lemon-gold but then darkens to a rich chartreuse, with red staining on stems and petioles.  First impression is that it may require some serious nitrogen, but it does not. Many are drought-tolerant if kept cool, and ratty foliage of non-shrubby types can be cut in fall, to reappear as the plants bloom. Plant in the woodland or shade garden for a bright spot.

Helleborus foetidus ‘Wester Flisk’  

Deep brick red stem and the lightest lime green petioles and leaves.  Like no other H. foetidus.  This is attractive strain inherited it characteristics from wild Spanish populations.  This shrubby plant is ideally suited to full sun or partial shade in rich garden soil, producing a large, open inflorescence of pistachio-green flowers in late winter and early spring.

Heuchera americana 'Dale's Strain'

Heuchera americana is noted as one of the most popular species of Heuchera in the American garden.  Of the two species of Heuchera – woodland or mountainous – the H. americana is a woodland.  It is found down to the mountains of Georgia but really loves rich, rocky woods with afternoon shade.  Tolerates a broad range of average to dry conditions and is a remarkable understory plant. Heuchera a. ‘Dale’s Strain’ is particularly interesting because of its unique silver-blue marbled foliage.  This variety has an attractive mounding form and lovely but insignificant white flowers.

Noted by collectors as the one that actually outshines the rest of the Heucheras.   ‘Plum Pudding’ actually has a shine to the foliage.  It is attractive at first blush of spring in northern climates and stays beautiful though the season.  The rich, saturated color of the deep purple foliage is a magnificent punch next silver and blue ornamental grasses in part shade.

Heuchera americana 'Silver Scrolls' PP

Silver Scrolls’ is a hybrid coral bells cultivar. It is a clump-forming perennial that features large, metallic silvery-purple leaves with dark purple veining and conspicuous but non-showy whitish flowers. The rounded, lobed leaves form a mound the reaches 5-8” tall with a spread that may about 12” wide. Tiny, whitish flowers with airy panicles appear in late spring to early summer on wiry stems rising 2’ above the foliage.

Heuchera micrantha 'Palace Purple'

Known fully as Heuchera micrantha var. diversifolia 'Palace Purple', this award winning Heuchera changed the standards for  all Heuchera in 1991.  The maple or ivy-like leaves can reach anywhere from 3”-5" wide.  The foliage is attractive with deep purple foliage above and beet-red beneath.  The color may fade to a bronze-green in hot summers.  It has tiny, pinkish traditional bell-shaped flowers which spring above on dark red stems about 2’ above the mound.  It blooms in late spring to early summer and holds an obedient habit throughout the long season.  Evergreen.

This selection was made by Alan Bloom from the famous Blooms of Bressingham Gardens in England in the 1950’s.  This carefully selected group was chosen from Blooms’ collection of over 2000+ hybrids.  The array of color is a riot of reds, oranges, corals, and whites all with the same base foliage.  The leaf shape is a traditional Heuchera cut-leaf with smooth, rounded margins in a deep green.  The foliage is evergreen as well as ever-beautiful in mild climates.  Evergreen.

H. var. villosa is known typically as a foliage plant with insignificant flowers.  However, this selection was selected and introduced for both its foliage and its dramatic white wands which flower late in the summer.  It is quite attractive set above 5” furry green leaves.  Its large, hairy, triangular lobed leaves are sharply-toothed.  The velvety look makes it touchable and inviting with its unique texture.  This is a hardy plant that offers a nice soft layer to the landscape.

Hosta x ‘Big Daddy’ 

White bell-shaped flowers rise above the giant, cool blue-green rounded and puckered leaves. Large size makes excellent background foliage for shade gardens. Thrives under tree canopies and covers up exposed legs of aging shrubs. Herbaceous.  Used in recent interest of “firescaping/fire wise” landscaping in the western states and as traditional with Hostas, woodland gardens, borders and containers. Prefers wet or constantly moist soil.

Hosta x 'Patriot'
Patriot Plantain Lily      

Bold, dark green foliage displaying a gleaming white, 1 inch wide edge to the leaves. Great for brightening a shady border. An offspring of the popular variety, 'Francee.' that tolerates more heat.  It is also a dwarf that makes excellent use of valuable landscape space in small city gardens or courtyards.  It has a real presence in the border or even in a container.  For a neat appearance, remove old foliage before new leaves emerge. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring. Where Hosta do not typically stand the heat, but Patriot in a shade garden does beautifully.
